Anyone who knows me knows that folk music is my favourite
genre (and you will see that if you keep reading my blog) but, I do like other
types. Today I want to introduce everyone to a British rapper. That’s right,
despite the high class sounding accent there really are some amazing British
rappers. In my opinion, none are better than East London rapper, Devlin.
If you already like rap I won’t really have to convince you
of Devlin’s talent. All you have to watch is his Fire in the Booth on BBC radio
1. However, if you aren’t a rap fan you may want to dismiss Devlin as just
another person that can rhyme but has no substance to his songs. That would be where you would go wrong.
Devlin’s rhymes are quite intricate and there is a reason
for this, he is a lover of poetry. He has been influenced by Shakespeare and is
known for using the Bard’s rhyming style in his own songs. But if you think
that means he’s completely on his own in the rap world, he isn’t. Devlin still
belongs to the Grime scene in the UK which means his music is heavily
influenced by hip hop, soul, garage music, drum and bass and so much more
(click here for a full explanation of Grime).
Not only can Devlin spit like no other, he also knows how to
sample the best songs, as he proves in Watch
Tower (sampling Hendrix’s cover of Bob Dylan’s song). Unfortunately, YouTube doesn't have the full video so please click here to be directed to Vimeo.
